Combined simulation (co-simulation) methods are presented for the automation of microwave designs in this paper, and then the detail work of vector fitting methods for parameter extraction and space mapping methods for optimization. Finally three examples about cavity filters are introduced in order to ensure the feasibility of the automation of microwave designs by co-simulation methods. With the rapid development of wireless communication technology and rule restraint of the cost and time for microwave designs, the shortcoming of simulation with single electromagnetic (EM) software such as the construction of complicated models, long calculation time, low efficient optimization, unconverged passes appears distinctly and evidently.Co-simulation methods which are realized by several kind of software or program language (involving MATLAB, HFSS, and VBScript) with one of which as the manager (MATLAB) will be a valid key to all the problems above. In the paper, co-simulation is put into practical application by designing and optimizing microwave filters. The results demonstrate that co-simulation could save much time for filter design and opitimization and that the automation of filter design is possible. Also the essential procedure script could be used as the basic code of computer-aided automatic turning.Expanding work is presented when the vector fitting (VF) methods and space mapping methods are researched, and then a new VF method for common lossy filters’ parameter extraction and a new simple but controllable mapping model for space mapping optimization method is described. The results from the three examples agree well with the ideal one. Also, the code scripts for building and renewing the simulation models are compiled carefully and outlined in the appendix.
