With the remarkable advances of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS),wireless sensor devices have been much smaller and more integrated, and that makesthe large scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs) become realistic. Therefore, therouting protocols in WSNs must scale well to the network scale enlargement includingthe node density increase and the network scope extension. The thesis mainly researches the routing protocols in large scale WSN. Firstlysome background information concerning WSNs is introduced. After that the thesissurveys the routing protocols in large scale WSNs. And in this section, according to thedifferent designing objectives, the protocols are classified based on different criteria, such as control overhead reduction, energy consumption mitigation and energy balance. In order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of each protocol, the thesishighlights their innovative ideas, describes the underlying principles in detail, analyzestheir advantages and disadvantages, and makes a comparison of each routing protocol. And then a number of open issues based these researches are proposed for routingprotocol design in large scale WSNs.Moreover, a routing protocol named Bluewave-R is proposed for large scale WSNsin this thesis. Bluewave-R seamlessly combines Bluewave routing protocol with arange-based sleep scheduling (RBSS) scheme. Therefore, not only does Bluewave-Rinherit the advantages of Bluewave but also it effectively solves the problem of themassively redundant nodes in large scale WSNs.
