Ballistic missile is the extremely powerful offensive weapons in modern warfare with long range, high speed and precision, strong penetration ability and lethality, high benefit-cost ratio, etc. At the same time, the major military powers of the world are actively looking for various ways to deal with ballistic missiles, and vigorously developing missile defense system. In the current study of ballistic target radar identification, improvement and development are urgently needed in areas such as target tracking, feature extraction, identification methods and experimental verification. Therefore, it is of vital importance to research deeply and systematically in these areas.Ballistic midcourse target recognition methods are mainly studied based on broadband information in this dissertation. The movement characteristics of the ballistic midcourse target are introduced at first, under which target kinetic equations are established in different coordinate systems. Then the concept of target radar cross section (RCS) is proposed by simulating the RCS features of several important objects, researching the variation of RCS with radar viewing angle and frequency, studying the RCS feature extraction of target objects. Finally the target High Resolution Radar Profile (HRRP) is discussed, based on which several target recognition methods are studied.
