Since the1990s, the study of image fusion was the rising trend. In recent years, domestic academia also achieved fruitful research results in the field. However the research of the image fusion technology for carborne photoelectric system, is still rare in china.The target of this paper is to lay the foundation,that for application image fusion technique in photoelectric reconnaissance system..with developments in the field of image technology, the basic principles of fusion, pretreatment methods,and Image fusion quality evaluation as the main line, this paper gives a brief historical overview of the image fusion technology and theory firstly. In view of the universal application of combination visible light and heat imager for carborne photoelectric system. so the study on visible light and infrared imager sensor of the respective imaging characteristics were compared and illustrated. And a registration method, based on canny edge visible and thermal image registration, is analyzed and realized. For visible light and infrared image fusion algorithm, research on weighted average method, image pyramid method and wavelet transform method are described, and their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Finally this paper designs a mast type photoelectric reconnaissance platform of image fusion system. The image fusion system introduces observers’subjective evaluation mechanism, also led to the formation of image fusion closed-loop control process. At the same Jime,corresponding to the scheme for image fusion board design was described.
