Wireless Mesh Network is a type of distributed network with the advantages ofself-organizing, self-configuring but without a center. Since the features of dynamic architecture,wireless multi-hop communication and multi-point communication, WMN’s link layer facedwith even more severe security issues than the common wireless network. Further more, thecurrent intrusion detection systems for wireless network have their own respective limitations, sothey are not able to meet the security needs brought by the special structure of WMN’s linklayer. At the same time, products of the embedded PDA have been another hot research domainafter mobile PC for its good mobile performance and intellective processing capabilities. It is thetypical application of embedded system which has the ability to manage the complex systemresources effectively as well as to be integrated with different wireless communication module,and is of many advantages on the security applications of wireless network. The wirelessnetwork security detection system based on PDA can provide an intelligent, dynamic, convenientinformation processing platform for the network managers to improve the management level ofdistributed network greatly. So this article did a lot of research on design and implementation ofdetection system based on PDA for attacks lanuched on the link layer of802.11WMN. The aimof this research is to exploit a system which can acquire the real-time information about thenetwork’s performance, monitor the operation to the network, diagnose the network’s failure,detect and response to attacks launched on the WMN’s link-layer and provide real-timeinformation support and safety warning ultimately.This paper first described the current researchstatus internal and abroad on WMN security along with the shortcomings of the popular intrusiondetection system using currently. Next, the advantage of PDA’s application on wireless securitywas analyzed in this paper. And then the following four parts were worked mainly:1. A comprehensive, detailed induction and conclusion for the802.11WMN’s networkarchitecture, networking, security risks and attacks may be subjected at the link layer was madein this part.2. A detailed description for the design of the detection system based on the PDA for attackslaunched on WMN’s link layer was made in this part, including the data capturing andanalyzing module, data storage module, data communication module along with the embeddeddevelopment technologies used.3. The detection scheme based on the state transition model formed according with802.11sstandard was designed, which include the Mesh connection management model and meshrouting management model, and be integrated with the security constraints of input and output. It is to be said theoretically that the detection scheme posses a very high detection accuracy andalmost no false positives.4. The detailed implementation process of the detection system was described. With ideas ofsoftware engineering as a guide, we used the technology of Windows Mobile development toachieve all the functional modules of the detection system, including system for the datacapturing and analyzing, data storing, data communication and the link-layer attack detectionsystem.5. The NS3was used to emulator a wireless mesh environment in order to test the feasibilityand performance of the attack detection scheme based on state transition model, experimentresult showed that the detection scheme has a good detection performance. At the same time atrue wireless environment was built to test the system’s function performance, including the datacapturing and analyzing performance, data storing performance and the data communicationperformance, experiment result showed that this detection system can meet the security needs ofthe WMN’s link layer.Finally, deficiencies and improvements of the system were summarized in this article.
