Left-handed materials are artificial structures. Because of its particularElectromagnetic characteristics,when used in the designs of microstrip leaky-waveantennas, the performance of antennas can be improved, which will promote theapplication of microstrip leaky-wave antennas to the mobile communication fields.This paper first studies the effects of some significant parameters of the unitstructure on the balance of the CRLH transmission line with the help of AnsoftDesigner.A balanced CRLH transmission line has a seamless transition from LH to RHoperation, then contrast study the unsymmetric CRLH structure and the symmetricCRLH structure based on the results obtained above. The results indicates that thesymmetric CRLH structure can always in a state of balance. Then applies the two kindsof CRLH structures on the microstrip leak-wave antennas. For the antennas based onthe unsymmetric CRLH structures first, contrast studies the balanced state and theunbalanced state which verifies the theoretical analysis above. Then contrast studies themicrostrip leaky-wave antenna which based on the symmetric CRLH structure, theresults indicates that by applying the symmetric CRLH structure on the leaky-waveantenna, the scanned area of the main wave beam has been increased and the size of theantenna has been decreased.
