Technology of maneuvering target tracking is an important subject in the information fusion system, and it has a wide range of applications in the national defense scientific research and civil fields. In view of the importance of national defense about airborne early warning, missile defense, people realized the significance of development of target tracking technology to realize maneuvering the high maneuvering target steadily, reliably and accurately. This article does a deeply study about high maneuvering target tracking problem using variable structure theory based on the interacting multiple model algorithm. The main research contents are as follows:Firstly, the basic theory and method of target tracking, linear and nonlinear filtering method and Kalman filter technology are introduced; Then the paper researches the tracking model in the development process of target tracking, and the principle of interacting multiple model algorithm and the concrete realization method are deeply studied, and analyzed the limitation of the interacting multiple model algorithm in high in tracking maneuvering targets.Secondly, The paper does a deeply study about the basic idea of variable structure multiple model algorithm, focuses on the research about three kinds of variable structure multiple model algorithm:a Digraph Switch Variable Structure Multiple Model (DS-VSMM) algorithm, adaptive grid Interacting Multiple Model (AGIMM) algorithm and a new Variable Structure Multiple Model combined with current statistical model algorithm is proposed in this thesis. Compared the key parameters of the algorithms in simulation, some improvements are made on the second kind of variable structure algorithm. Simulations of three kinds of variable structure algorithm are made to give a summary and outlook about the advantages of variable structure multiple model algorithm and the existing problems.Finally, this paper introduces the further optimization method for multiple model algorithm in recent ten years, and focus on the method by increasing the measurement information to improve the tracking accuracy,most of them can be combined with variable structure multiple model algorithm to improve the tracking performance.
