Autodesk Inventor2012is worldwide3D mechanical designsoftware for creating3D digital prototypes used in the design, visualization and simulation of products. Marking menus are newinteraction model which are usually having pop-up radial menus andgesture recognition. The pop-up radial menus are used for a novicemode when right mouse button is “pressed and held” for a second, which could let the user select a menu item similar to traditionallinear menus. The marking menus are introduced into Autodesk Inventor inorder to improve design efficiency of customers, since manystudies have shown that the marking menus are having higherperformance than the linear menus. And, it may make the users feelfun with the “gesture” operation in their daily work. However, we encountered several critical issues when we triedto introduce marking menus into Autodesk Inventor. In this paper,we present those critical issues for having best marking menu userexperience. And, we also analyze the issues with user research, usability study, and questionnaire survey and deep-interviewmethodologies. Finally, we provide design and improved design for the interaction behavior in Autodesk Inventor2012based on theuser research results.
