With the rapid development of wireless communications, embedded systems, distributedinformation processing and microelectronic technology, sensor networks, composed ofsensor nodes with information perception, information processing and communicationcapabilities, have been boomed and wide applications. Sensor networks take data as a center,and are resource-constrained. Data transmission and processing are their main tasks. Theincrement of information transmission efficiency means to the improvement of overallnetwork performance. With the limited of network resources, in order to break the bottleneckof data transmission, we take the network coding technology into the sensor networks, andutilize its advantage in information processing to enhance the performance of datatransmission.In this paper, we first introduce the research status of sensor network, network codingand applications of network coding in sensor networks. And then, we set out some relatedknowledge of sensor network, network coding and network simulation tool NS-3. Here, adetailed explanation on random linear network coding is presented, which is a special randomnetwork coding. It is a linear mapping. In the case of finite fields, its success rate of decodingis greatly high, and very suitable for sensor networks.Moreover, based on sociality of network, we propose a novel network coding scheme forcluster-based sensor networks. The idea of the scheme is that parts of nodes are used ascoding nodes, for sensor networks do not need all nodes to have encoding function. In thescheme, we take use of the centrality of nodes to set the period of examination time, and makecode have pointed, timely and intelligent features. Simulation results show that the novelnetwork coding scheme can improve the data-transfer performance of sensor networks, tosome extent.Finally, we improve the coding schemes based on sociality, and put forward anenergy-centric network coding scheme with multiple types of coding nodes. In the scheme,coding nodes are classified based on the heterogeneity, and the energy balance strategy isutilized. In this way, it improves the efficiency of network coding, and achieves fullutilization of network resources. Simulation results show that the scheme not only enhancesdata-transfer performance, but also achieves maximum utilization of network resources.The main features and innovation of this paper are reflected in the following threeaspects.(1) For sensor networks do not need all nodes to have encoding function, weproposed part of the encoding nodes, and designed a coding node selection and launchmechanism.(2) We put forward a novel network coding scheme for cluster-based sensor networks based of sociality.(3) Taking heterogeneity and energy balance into account, weclassify the nodes and proposed energy-centric network coding scheme with multiple types ofcoding nodes.
