In recent years, with the improvement of the deep space exploration technology, the study focused on the limits of the light field, photon counting system have been widely applicated in the laser measurement, the field of air pollution testing, environmental testing field, optical time domain reflectometry and some other fields. The design of the annihilation photon counter in this article can take out the optical signal which got lost in the background noises and then converted into electrical signals. The system is mainly designed from the front photodetector, amplifier discriminator, FPGA, and microcontroller technology systems. This article firstly studies the theoretical basis of quantum counter, and describes several commonly used optical detectors, design the power amplifier circuit, select discriminator. Then described the design of the system hardware and software in detail, then do system simulation and test it. According to the data measured with the results of MATLAB simulation output data, analyze the data to select the best discrimination voltage. When choosing the amplifier in this article we use the MAX5207, and MAX9010as the filter. The selection of FPGA chip is Altera’s EPM1C3T144SN, using the Verilog VHDL language to control the FPGA chip count and LED display, using MCU to store the results of the counter, and then sent the result to the computer.According to the results of the experiments to verify the design of the photon counting system is efficient, stable, reaches the design requirements of the system.
