In recent years, with the Internet, fiber-optic broadband, the wireless transmission technology, as well as IP-based high-definition multimedia content distribution technology’s rapid development in the world, the traditional digital TV broadcasting network-based business mode was more and more faced the challenge from the Internet video services and streaming media advertising. Therefore, how to introduce better services to improve the TV experience and attract more pay-TV subscribers has become the most important thing that digital television service operators need to think and to solve.The OTT-TV (Over the Top TV) also known as Internet TV is introduced to solve above traditional DTV operators’issue. It’s a new kind of Internet based TV service which uses Internet to send vivid of multimedia to all kinds of condition receive terminals and integrate with other popular Internet services. As the next generation of Internet television services which may alternative to the traditional digital TV business model, the OTT-TV has revealed a vigorous development prospects and opportunities.With a fast-growing number of tradition digital TV operators began upgrade or deploy the OTT-TV operation platform, traditional digital TV set-top box has unable to meet the requirements of the OTT-TV service since its deprecated technical limitations. Therefore, a new generation of digital TV set-top box technology which will be able to support the OTT-TV’s requirements has become the focus of digital TV and related industry.As the traditional digital TV’s broadcast based carrier network can’t be compatible with Internet and its backward technical limitations, there are only very limited user interactive features can be run on that broadcast network. But the OTT-TV was built entirely above the Internet for the new generation of digital TV services at the beginning time, so any OTT receive terminal (Set Top Box) can easily access and enjoy different Internet services while the user is watching television program. For example, when a user is watching a TV channel, at the same time, that user can also use Internet to communicate and interact with other users. In addition, OTT-TV can carry more popular Internet services. For instance the multimedia sharing service, the P2P streaming media service, online playing and social video network service.For traditional digital TV set-top box, multimedia signal only comes from the cable based broadcast network. The key difference of OTT-TV set-top box and traditional set-top box is OTT set-top box must be able to support multiple multimedia sources and multimedia formats. This requires that the OTT set-top box middleware software must design and implement a convenient and scalable multimedia management module to support the request on multiple media sources and format.This thesis is major for the above questions of media related features on OTT set-top box middleware software, designed and implemented a GStreamer multimedia framework based multimedia management module and tightly integrated with other OTT digital TV middleware modules via D-Bus IPC framework. This software module provides a set of unified media related functions, such as playing the local playback media source, network streaming media sources, broadcast media source and support variety of multimedia related functions like as play, stop, blank video, mute audio and etc.
