Left-handed material (LHM) is a new functional material, in which both the permittivity and the permeability assume negative values. There are a lot of novel interesting electromagnetic phenomena, such as negative refraction, anomalous Doppler effect, anomalous Cerenkov radiation. So slab waveguide with LHM may be one of the hot international subjects, which has high value of theoretical study and comprehensive prospect of application in the field of Optical communication. Based on the point, the paper can be made as follows:First, transmission properties of structures, no matter symmetric or not, in which the core, covering layer and under layer are all traditional materials, are discussed. Eigenvalue equation is deduced by using the transfer matrix method. Using graphical method, eigenvalue equation is solved and then corresponding electric field distribution also can be got. It’s found that there exists fundamental mode in the waveguide made with right-handed material.Second, in structure that the core is left-handed material, covering layer and under-layer are traditional materials, transmission properties are discussed. It’s found that, there exit not only oscillation mode but also surface mode which present the existence of surface wave in the waveguide of the structure, and the fundamental guided mode doesn’t exist. This property will play an improving role in the development of waveguide components.Third, an symmetric slab waveguide with three layer Metal-LHM-Metal is studied. It’s found that:the fundamental guided mode doesn’t exist. The first-order mode TE1exists only in a particular range of R.. It supports the transmission of oscillation and surface modes and there has a marked effect for electric field distribution of order m. These findings will provide theoretical basis for the development of new waveguide devices, this model may have some perfect performance than current models. The work mentioned above, in the near future, will play a guidance for the theoretical design and application of slab waveguide containing LHM.
