As a compact high-power microwave source relativistic magnetron(RM),occupies an important position.After decades of research,the understanding of the relativistic magnetron matures,which has significant research value of its military,civilian,and scientific research fields and has great potential.Many researchers are working to solve the problem of low conversion efficiency of the relativistic magnetron energy.After a variety of researches they has made some progresses.This article describes the development as well as the achievements of the transparent cathode used in relativistic magnetron. Some theoretical analysis of transparent cathode shows that it has some excellent properties.By means of computer simulations relativistic magnetron using the transparent cathode has made many good results.It proves that relativistic magnetron using the transparent cathode has a faster start-up time,more output power,higher energy conversion efficiency and lower mode competition.compared to conventional pillar cathode.Furthermore,some further studies of the transparent cathode have been carried out,such as:changing the number,length,angular position and the shape of the cathode strips.Also the cathode external radius has been changed in this program and the maximum total efficiency we achieved is22.1%.Finally,according to the results of theoretical analysis and computer simulations, we designed three kinds of transparent cathode structures and performed some tests based on a S-band permanent magnet packaging relativistic magnetron.Then we obtained maximum output power with780.3MW and the total efficiency is8.4%.With the same experimental conditions,using conventional pillar cathode the results are521MW and6.5%.According to the results of the two kinds of cathodes,RM using transparent cathode can obtain the pure spectrum.Meanwhile,the results of the tests also corroborated the conclusions of computer simulations.
