Terahertz lies between far-infrared and microwave in electromagnetic spectrum with frequency from0.1to10THz. The potential of terahertz radiation is impressive in many fields, such as physics, chemistry, biomedical engineering, astronomy, materials science and environment engineering. Terahertz technology is a brand-new electromagnetic wave technology, is believed to be the master technology of international electronics and information science, and will have broad application prospects.The lack of terahertz source has strongly limited the application of terahertz technology, making this frequency region quite unexploited. The research about terahertz source has been addressed in many countries include our country and gotten rapid and very important progress. In this paper, a new terahertz source which based on vacuum electronics will be introduced. The main research is as follows:Firstly, the characteristics and applications of terahertz are introduced, the current overview of the development of THz technology at home and abroad is described, and the research significance of the ladder circuit TWT in this paper.Secondly, the history and the current research situation of the ladder slow wave circuit are introduced, and then use electromagnetic simulation software to analysis the transmission characteristics of terahertz wave in the periodic ladder slow wave circuit combined with development of micro-fabrication technology. Analyze the impact of various parameters on the structure of the dispersion characteristics and interaction impedance, to find changes in the law in order to the follow-up study.Thirdly, study the abnormal structure of the ladder circuit, include:the structure with different ridge shapes, double trough, grating ladder circuit, four ridges loaded ladder circuit, circular waveguide ladder circuit, tunnelplane slow-wave circuit and multi-conductor ridged ladder circuit.Finally, design a linearly tapered waveguide as the input and output structure for the TWT, on this basis, design a ladder circuit TWT, its working voltage is9.9kV, current is100mA, working at about384GHz and get the power gain14dB.
