With the rapid development of power electronics technology, a large number of nonlinear loads have been used widely. That caused serious harmonic pollution prob-lems. Harmonic control has become one of the key in power sector. The active power filter is an effective means to suppress harmonics and improve power quality. It can compensate harmonic that frequency and amplitude is changing and the compensation characteristics are not affected by grid impedance.In this paper, we introduced the significance, development status and trends of active power filter firstly through reading domestic and overseas literatures. And then, harmonic detection algorithm and current tracking control technology are researched. They are significant technologies that affect the performance of active power filter. By comparing p-q algorithm and ip-iq algorithm based on instantaneous reactive power theory, we select ip-iq algorithm. Several current tracking control methods are compared. We summarized their advantages and disadvantages, and then the im-proved hysteresis control method is chosen to achieve tracking the compensation cur-rent command signal. In order to verify the correctness of detection algorithm and tracking control strategy, the system is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK environ-ment.The power monitoring system based on active power filter is design to upper and lower machine form. TMS320C5416is the core of control circuit in lower machine. The CPLD logic circuit is used to supplement DSP. They complete the data collection, harmonic detection. PWM signal generation and serial communication functions. The host computer complete the display, analysis and processing of grid data by Visual C++development platform and SQL Server database technology. This paper focuses on the control circuit hardware design and software design and introduces the host computer interface design.
