Usually one frequency microwave output can be generated in the traditional highpower microwave source. As the key part of all kinds of HPM system, according to theeffective mechanism, the threshold value of the HPM effect will drop greatly, whenelectron system is attacked by the beat microwave frequency which produced fromsynthesis of close dual-frequency or the multi-frequency HPM wave beam. In this paper,the physical mode for the X-band dual-frequency variable impedance relativisticbackward wave oscillator(RBWO) was firstly put forward to produce dual-frequencymicrowave output,the results show that the device can produce stable dual-frequencymicrowave output. The main contents of this paper are as follows:1. The investigation background of HPM, the actual state of RBWO investigationin the world and some of the major problems and solution in the study are introduced.Then the purpose and value of actual dual-frequency relativistic backward waveoscillator is explained.2. The working principle and the characteristics of relativistic backward waveoscillator are elaborated. Based on the analysis of non-uniform slow wave structure, theprinciple of dual-frequency relativistic backward wave oscillator is discussed.3. To the physical mode, the dispersion equation and the hot cavity dispersionequation are derived, the numerical calculation is carried out.4. The RBWO with coaxial dual sinusoidal ripples slow-wave structure is studiedwith the software CHIPIC,the result show:at voltage of403kV, current of12.5kA andguided magnetic field of0.73T, the dual-frequency microwave’s frequency are7.85GHzand8.35GHz, average power is about0.7GW and average power efficiency is13.9%.5.The equation of the coupling impedance of the corrugated-inner-conductorbackward-wave oscillator is derived Scattering matrix of waveguide with mutantstructure is derived. The variable impedance of the physical mode has been optimized;the C-band and X-band microwaves can be generated.
