With the rapid development of computer graphics, in such as military, entertainment, medical and other filed, real-time rendering technology plays an increasingly important role. Rendering in real-time and rendering speeds are two respects of a contradiction in real-time rendering technology. In recent years, researches have been focused on how to get a fast rendering speed while getting an excellent rendering effect. Environment mapping technique is a special method of texture-mapping, texture mapping is an important part of real-time rendering.Initiated by a fighter combat display system, the system requires real-time and high quality rendering effects on flying and combating. There are lots of modules in the system, the environment mapping module is an important component. In order to achieve the purpose of efficient and realistic, then in-depth study about the environment mapping techniques and an illumination model based on environment mapping. Such as two-step texture mapping, spherical environment mapping, cube environment mapping, parabolic environment mapping and other techniques will be analyzed to understand the principle and characteristics of the environment map. Cube environment mapping which is now widely used and get supports by the hardware has a better performance in these environment mapping technologies. However, cubic environment mapping technology also has the shortcomings, it sampling less on the surface but more on the edge of a cubic. Because of the shortcomings, a new improvement based on cubic mapping will be brought out. The improved environment mapping techniques can achieve a better effect than the traditional cube environment mapping in the results achieved.If the object in the virtual scene is only the role of the environment map will be a little simple, in order to get more realistic effects, the illumination model based on the environment mapping has been researched, it will pre-filter the environment color. That can result rendering quality richer and more realistic. In order to achieve faster rendering speed, the experiments in this paper are based on the GPU high-level shading language HLSL, so not only guarantee a better rendering quality but also to ensure a faster rendering speed. Finally, the above results applied to the fighter combat display system, completed the needs of analysis, system design, module design, system processes and important class will be introduced. Environment mapping module which in the system get use of the researched environment mapping techniques and the results in this paper so that can get a brilliant rendering effects and a fast rendering rates.
