The emergent protection of damaged painted pottery unearthed from a excavation field is very necessary, but there is rare research about this issue. In this paper, we did some systematic research work on the deterioration of this seriously damaged pottery, and developed some materials and one method for protecting this kind of pottery. Main research work is as followed:1、Composition and physical properties of seriously damaged pottery samples were analyzed, and these samples were provided from some archaeology excavations in Shanxi province. By studying the disease causes of typical samples from internal and external aspects, we came to a conclusion that soluble salt dissolution and crystallization cycle is a main damage reason of the these pottery samples.2、Properties of7kinds of acrylate emulsion provided by Terracotta Warrior and Horse Museum were examined on simulated pottery samples, and the results showed one material marked as A2was basically suitable for protecting the kind of seriously damaged pottery, because it displayed a better performance than other in some tests, such as no influence on appearance of sample, fine film forming performance, appropriate penetration depth, good vapor permeability, and can enhance mechanical property of the treated samples. However, some other properties such as the hydrophobicity, UV aged resistance and salt tolerances, were not very good.3、In order to improve UV aged resistance and penetration of the acrylate A2, nano-silica obtained by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis reactions of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were blended into A2with different volume percentages. Furthermore, some tests were conducted on this kind of modified materials including color change, viscosity, glass transition temperature, molecular structure, UV aged resistance, the microstructure of the modified materials. Finally, the permeable performance of materials was observed, during the modified materials were applied on simulated pottery samples. Then we tested the properties of treated pottery samples, such as the appearance change, compressive strength, vapor permeability, hydrophobic ability, UV aged resistance and salt tolerance. With the results of these tests, we developed a material which is more suitable for protecting seriously damaged pottery placed in storehouse or museum than A2, so this kind of material has a value to popularize. This experiment firstly obtained a organic/inorganic composition by modified polyacrylate A2with nano-silica, in which the polyacrylate A2was wildly used in Terracotta Warrior and Horse Museum. The results indicated that the composite material (named as A2+14) obtained a homogeneous phase without agglomeration, and it had a good permeable performance, thermal resistance and the UV aged resistance. What’s more, it can keep good vapor permeability and improve the mechanical properties of simulated pottery samples. At the same times, the effect of decompressed osmosis on protection of simulated pottery samples were studied, and we found that this method can improve the permeable performance and enhance the mechanical properties without bringing other damage to seriously damaged pottery. Especially for protection small volume objects, this method has an advantage in application, furthermore, this research can give some meaning guides for conservation of the seriously damaged pottery excavated from excavation field of Qin Shinghuang Terracotta Army.
