Target tracking is an important part of the video surveillance process, and it is also an important research in computer vision and pattern recognition. Along with the development of infrared imaging technology and infrared image’s advantage of the day and night work and no weather impact, infrared imaging technology and infrared target tracking is widely used in many fields of video surveillance and infrared guidance. Target tracking based on infrared images which is to find the target in infrared image sequence, and implement effective tracking process. This topic comes from an infrared imaging system of North China University of technology. It aims to achieve real-time tracking of moving targets by considering all aspects of the tracking process and to improve tracking robustness and resolve the problem of short-term shelter. The main research works are as follows:1、Introduces the development process of the graphics card, and do researches on the infrared image preprocessing algorithm research, combined with the issues that need to be improved.2、Describes the target detection algorithms and their application, according tothe issues that need improved algorithm, and design the target detection process.3、Some typical tracking algorithm introduced, and the kalman filter and meanshift algorithm combination used in the system of the subject. In this paper, some related tracking algorithms have been improved and design of the entire tracking system are performed, and the test results proved that the system can aecurately identify moving target, and accurately track the target. The robustness of the system has increased, tracking real-time can be guaranteed. and the screen is almost smooth. The target of short-term occlusion or partial occlusion can best solved.
