Some kind of foreign substances which may damage the aircraft or system are called Foreign Object Debris, abbreviated as FOD. The common variety of FOD objects include remnant of aircraft, wild animal, wood, block, plastic products and so on. Some cases showed that FOD hazards are very serious because some foreign objects on the runway can easily be inhaled in engine which can result in engine failure. Therefore, the development of FOD detection system is very necessary. So far, some FOD detection systems have been successfully developed in foreign countries. Domestic research in this area is still at the beginning, therefore there is practical value for the study of airport radar detection system.Airport radar detection system based on radar images has been studied in the dissertation. At first, the building of airport FOD detection system is introduced, including structure of software system and realization modules. The software system is divided into two parts called Image obtaining module and Image processing module in debug mode. Radar scan data is obtained and shown in Image obtaining module and a series of image processing algorithms are integrated in Image processing module. Among them, the software design focuses on the key technology and difficulty, and the corresponding solution is put forward. Secondly, radar image processing method is the key technology of FOD detection system. The noise filtering and edge detection methods are highlighted and an improved noise filtering method based on2-D DFT-DWT transform is put forward. Data obtained from the radar sensor must be prepreceded, such as denoising, enhancement which can have a good preparation for subsequent processing. At last, threshold segmentation is implemented to realize separation of background and objectives. The airport runway is detected with Hough transform and FOD in airport runway is located with fast and efficient algorithms.Firstly, requirements of FOD detection system software were analysized and platform was built on the basis of the analysis. Then FOD was detected and positioned after radar data processing. The main job is shown as following:1) The functional requirements the FOD detection system software was carefully analyzed. Every module of the system was realized based on analysis.2) A great deal of scientific information and related papers on radar image processing have been read and analyzed. Some suited processing algorithms of the airport runway image were selected based on the anylysis and the processing effects of the algorithms for radar image were compared.3) Based on Microsoft Visual C++6.0platform, we developed image processing module with C++language, and the experimental results show that the system can effectively detect FOD and locate it in the runway.
