Recently, Quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOA) have been reported as a promising device to have huge potential value on the aspect about application of all-optical communication network. Some research prove that QD-SOA have the capability to achieve high speed over 160Gb/s.This article combine with basic physical mechanism of QD-SOA and theory knowledge about digital signal process, then use MATLAB code to simulation and research based on basic physical performance and further to study something about capability and application of QD-SOA.From the aspect of steady state, we use rate equation to research related steady characteristics of QD-SOA, do some related theory analysis to compare with experiment result and validate the result using MATLAB code for achieving further conclusion.From the aspect of dynamic state, we adopt Finite difference time domain algorithm to calculate the rate equation and then observe the gain/phase recovery performance when signal pulse put into the QD-SOA. In the same time, we also take into account the asynchrony of gain recovery and phase recovery, and compare this result with other article to prove that our result is more accurate. This step will establish the foundation for simulation about ultra-fast optical switch.In this aspect about application, our primary research is about application of optical switch using MZI based on QD-SOA. This article can combine the published research conclusion and design this structure of optical switch based on QD-SOA. And then simulate transmit performance of ultra-fast optical signal through designed function module or system module using MATLAB, analyze the advantage comparing with common SOA and redesign novel optical switch based on QD-SOA to exploit the superiorities and advance some idea about ultra-fast signal process. This article also focuses on the contrast ratio characters of all-optical switch with asymmetric coupler based on QD-SOA and the characteristics and switch windows profiles about optical switch will be explored to get better performance.
