The generation master of Chinese literature Mr. Wang Xiantang who rigorous academic life,has extensive knowledge and profound scholarship. He was a famous philologist, archaeologist,library scientist and epigraphist for he has deep knowledge in catalogue, edition, inscription,paleography, phonology, archaeology, library science, poetic prose, painting and calligraphy, sohe was honored as ‘the rare scholars in the past three hundred years in China.’To be sure, the outstanding achievements of academic research are from Mr. WangXiantang’s hard research life, but the influence of good teachers and helpful friends is also animportant factor that cannot be ignored. Wang Xiantang received a good education of Chineseand Western learning in infancy and nonage time. Since1929, Wang Xiantang administer theShandong Provincial Established Library, he made acquaintance with many domestic andoverseas scholars at work, and gained a lot from discussing academic with them. From the letterthat preserved in Letters of Wang Xiantang’s Mentor, he has frequent correspondences with FuSinian, Zhao Luchuo, Wang Chongmin, Li Xiaoyuan and so on, he was the mainstream scholarthat has a broad impact in thirty and forty time. In recent years, not a few papers study WangXiantang’s academic contributions, but the papers discussing the relationship between he andother scholars are very few. Therefore, based on the Letters of Wang Xiantang’s Mentor, thisarticle simply describes teachers and friends of Wang Xiantang by investigating thecommunication between Wang Xiantang and his mentor. Thereby, this can reflect the status ofacademic discussion and inspire between scholars in Republican period.This paper is divided into three parts. The first chapter is Wang Xiantang’s life biographical.According to his lifetime of learning capability, it divides into three stages: from childhood toserve on the Shandong Province Established Library (1896-1929), from administer the library tothe liberation of Jinan (1929-1948), from live in Jinan to death.The second chapter is the unique succession of teachings. Based on <The Poetry of VisitThe Monument> which is Wang Xiantang’s own account of his study trip and some letters, thischapter explores his academic origin compatible with Chinese and Western. The third chapter isthe large circle of friends. Due to his lots of friends, this chapter discusses the representativepersonages organized by locale and investigates his friends deeds based on the letters betweenWang Xiantang and the scholars.
