The digital halftone technology,based on human visual attribute, is a technology under the help ofelectronic computer and mathmatics tool to represent the image on the output equipment of binary orlimited-grayscaled.This technology is widely applied in the fields of printing,digital image compressingand storage.The quality evaluation of image is the important indicator of measuring the digital halftonealgorithms,it can substitude the human eyes for evaluating images in the realtime evironment,the imagequality assessment and the research of halftone algorithm are supplementing each other.Therefore, theresearch of digital halftone technology while considering into image quality assessment is great helpful toimprovement of halftone algorithm.As the gradually improvements of computer and various image collecting devices, the higher andhigher requirement that people asked for the printing image quality, however, the halftone imagesgenerated by the traditional digital halftone algorithms have not meeted the needs of people.The paper hasdeep research of various original halftone algorithms, make up for each other’s deficiencies,and proposesdot diffusion halftone algorithm based on the HVS model and edge detecting.According to the analysis ofcurrent image quality evaluation methods,considering the visual attributes of human eys,an objectivequality measuring method based on the HVS model is proposed.Dot diffusion algorithm can achieve parallel processing,which has more room to improve.The paperimprove the dot diffusion algorithm using the HVS model and optimizingly processes the edge informationof images.The experiment result show the feasibility of improvment.making a summary of current image quality assessment method, introducing several commonmethods,analysising their merits and demerits,using the Livedatabase to experiment and finally,the papersummarizes features of suitable image type in several kinds of evaluation method.Aiming at evaluating thehalftone method,an image quality assessment method based on structural similarity of HVS is proposed.
