Nowadays, manufacturing industry becomes more and more competitive.Manufacturing plants all over the world have to enhance the degree of automationand system stability in order to cut cost and expand production and improvecompetitiveness. The increasing cost of labor, request for more high-quality products,growing proportion of automated manufacturing systems and many other factorscontribute to the urgent needs of automated monitoring system in manufacturingindustry. In term of replacing human eye, conduct high speed product production andhigh-precision detection, visual imaging system is essential and needs ceaselessimprovement and updating.Visual imaging system is based on machine vision technology and it usescomputers or modular system for image processing and analysis of information inthe absence of human intervention. Automation, objective, non-contact, high speedand high precision is visual imaging system’s greatest feature. Compared withgeneral image processing systems, visual imaging system pays more emphasis onactual production environment matching and even higher speed, accuracy andreliability.It is indisputable that the technology from digital image processing andelectronic, will be adopted in the computer vision system. To meet the requirementof speed and accuracy, the whole system highly depends on some typical functions,such as the definition of the test image, the clearness of the measuring content, thevelocity of the circuits and the stability of image processing methods. Therefore, theresearch on digital image process as well as electronic design automation (EDA),is strongly related with such kind measurement. Using computer as a tool, basing on the EDA software platform, the designerswould work on the project by writing VHDL, which is a language describinghardware. To be able to finish the adaptive compilation, logical mapping andprogram downloading for the specific chip, computer would automatically do logicalcompile, simplification, segmentation, synthesis, optimization, placement, routingand simulation. Thus the appearance of EDA greatly improves the efficiency anduser ability of circuits design, in the meantime, it helps relieve the labor intensity.Digital image processing is a form of signal processing for which the input is animage, the output is related with the input by using different processing techniques,such as de-nosing, enhancement, restoration, segmentation and feature extraction.In general, digital image processing is used to either improve the visual quality ofthe image or to extract a set of characteristics or parameters related to the image. Insome other cases, in order to transform and store images more conveniently, we usethis technique to implement transformation, coding and compression of image.The research on this thesis is related to the median filter algorithm from digitalimage processing, It is also being implemented in FPGA, the VHDL codes areincluded.In this paper, we also study the source, CCD, camera and PLC communicationsthat needed in the actual visual imaging systems used in automated productionequipment. Moreover, the paper includes some automated detection program withwhich I serve some of the world’s top500enterprises. I use the world’s leadingmodular visual imaging system--CV-3000series--to solve OEM’s productionmonitoring, quality control and other aspects in China.
