The rapid development of national economy in China these years has resulted in a strong requirement for traffic improvements. However, it is challenging to eliminate the gap between the traffic supply and demand due to the inefficient manual management. Therefore, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) with the feature of management automation has become one of the most popular technologies to solve the issue above. In this paper, we mainly concern about the Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) problem in the Unattended Automatic Card Issuing (UACI) system, which is an important element of ITS. Our work includes:We present the architecture introduction and the working principle analysis of UACI, and design a infrared detection circuit, a piezoelectric sensor detection circuit and a communication interface of VIA.We have a sophisticated understanding of the prior AVI technologies based on both the principles and criterions of vehicle classification analysis. Furthermore, we propose a novel AVI approach based on the automatic characteristic parameters extraction and optimization. In this approach, we have found that the chassis formation, which is ignored by the informed researches, has a significant implication on the accuracy of vehicle identification. We have realized a vehicle recognizer with vector machine support based on the in-deep study of the existing pattern recognition theories and their implementations. It has the advantages of solve small sample, nonlinear and high dimension pattern recognition problem.Experimental results based on historical data traces show that our approach can effectively increase the accuracy of vehicle identification.
