"Metamaterial" means a kind of artificial composite structures or materials with extraordinaryphysical properties. New features can be achieved by orderly designing the key physical scale orstructure of materials. These new features break through some basic concepts of the traditionalelectromagnetic theory. The performance of microwave devices can be greatly enhanced by usingmetamaterials. This thesis researches the application of metamaterials in microstrip antenna. The mainwork and innovations can be summarized as follows:First, learn and study the basic theory of metamaterials, analysis characteristic parameters ofseveral metamaterials and learn extraction methods, master the basic design of metamaterials, designseveral metamaterials structure according to the theory of metamaterials. Analysis of the effect ofstructural parameters to metamaterials properties, and simulate them by software.Second, a miniature metamaterial microstrip antenna witch works in X-band and Ku-band isdesigned. To get two frequency range by adding metamaterial structure to substrate of normalmicrostrip antenna. The working frequency of this antenna has significantly descended58%to that ofthe conventional microstrip antenna, and this antenna has good radiation characteristics.Third, a Ku-band ultra-wideband microstrip antenna is designed, through reasonable adjustmentmetamaterial structure and the operating frequency of the antenna, so that their working frequency isclose to each other, then the bandwidth is broadened to29%, the antenna has good efficiency andgain.Fourth, WLAN (wireless local area network, WLAN) is becoming increasingly popular with thedevelopment of wireless communication, a5.8GHz metamaterial antenna used in WLAN is proposed.The size of this antenna is1/9of ordinary one. The gain and bandwidth can meet the needs. And thisantenna has good radiation characteristics.
