With the vigorous development of China’s road network and passenger transport, road transportation is more and more getting the favour of people, but at the same time the coach overcrowding problems are more and more serious and become "first killer" of the road transportation. Therefore, how to make improvements to the existing video statistical techniques to make it can also accurately statistics the number of passengers in complex coach environment, and then to effectively govern and prevent the overcrowding problems, ensure traffic safety, is the focus research of the video passengers statistics field.Based on video pedestrian statistical methods, our method introduce infrared laser generator, and counting the number of passengers by the on‐board cameraattached an IR bandpass filter, which is used to capture the position change of the infrared laser line, and can get ahigh statistical accuracy in poor lighting conditions. Our approach generates passenger blocks and shift map according to the position change of the infrared laser line when passengers pass through, and get the number of passengers and their moving direction by the block number and shift map variation tendency. In addition, we also apply our approach to indoor conditions, and try to use multi‐point infrared laser generator instead of a linear laser, extending the detection region from a line to a surface, which improves the statistical accuracy, and can simply track pedestrians moving path. The experimental results show that our approach has high accuracy and instantaneity, and it can offset the problem of low accuracy statistics which is caused by poor lighting conditions.
