Metal-core Piezoelectric Fiber (MPF) is a newly developed piezoelectric functional device. Itsmetal core and the coating layer can be used as the two electrodes, so that a single MPF can be usedas a sensor or actuator. It has many incomparable advantages comparing to traditional piezoelectricmaterials. And it has been paid amount of attention since it was invented. In this article, theencapsulation of MPF is proposed to meet the demand of standardized production. Besides, its drivingand sensing property is also studied.In the first chapter, an introduction about the development history of smart material, sensing anddriving devices and MPF has been made.In the second chapter, the encapsulation scheme and a standardized production technology ofMPF actuator was designed. And a series of MPF actuators sample of different size were produced.Besides, the reliability of the encapsulation was studied by measuring and comparing the keyparameters of MPF before and after encapsulation.In the third chapter, the driving performance of MPF actuator has been analyzed from theoreticaland experimental aspects separately. The driving coefficient was calculated from theoretical aspectand measured with experiment. Besides, we compared the driving coefficient achieved from theoreticderivation and experiment and researched the error between them.In the fourth chapter, the design scheme and standardized encapsulation technology of MPFsmart layer were proposed. Materials were selected and single MPF and flower-shaped MPF smartlayer were manufactured according to design scheme. Besides, the reliability of the encapsulation wasstudied by measuring and comparing the key parameters of MPF before and after encapsulation.In the fifth chapter, the sensing performance of MPF smart layer before and after encapsulationwas studied. The sensing performance consistency of the three flower-shaped MPF in smart layer wasresearched. Besides we also got the sensing coefficient of the MPF smart layer by theoreticalderivation and experiment. A new non-destructive calibration method is proposed and validated to befeasible to calibrate the MPF smart layer.
