| Vocabulary, as one of the three elements of language, plays a vital role in thelearning of language. Vocabulary is the foundation of language learning. Andpart-of-speech acquisition is a part of vocabulary learning. Although many scholarsboth abroad and in China have done researches on vocabulary learning strategy andachieved a lot, few researches have been done on examining learners’ cognitive stylein part-of-speech acquisition. The thesis aims to explore the correlation betweenlearners’ cognitive style and part-of-speech acquisition, to help them understand theirown cognitive style and to improve their part-of-speech learning efficiency. Theformation of English learners’ part-of-speech acquisition strategy can improve theirawareness of part-of-speech, cut down the misuse of part-of-speech, and improve theircomprehensive level and lay a good foundation for their future development. Thestudy based on researches which have been done by scholars both in China andabroad tends to study the correlation between cognitive style and Englishpart-of-speech learning. The theoretical basis of the thesis are Contrastive AnalysisHypothesis, Cognitive Style (Field Independent (FI) Field Dependent (FD)),Cognitive Strategy, and The Philosophy of the National English Curriculum.Seventy-two students coming from Class10of Hebei Raoyang Senior HighSchool are chosen as subjects in the research. The research focuses on the followingaspects: the correlation between cognitive styles and part-of-speech acquisition; fieldindependent learners can learn better than field dependent learners in part-of-speechacquisition. In order to testify the above two hypotheses, the author adopted aquestionnaire and a test. Students’ FD/FI styles are measured by the Test EmbeddedFigures (TEF). The scores of the part-of-speech learning are got by the Test ofPart-of-Speech which is designed by the author. The relationship between FD/FI andpart-of-speech acquisition was examined with the SPSS17.0. Descriptive statisticsand correlation analysis were used to investigate the FD/FI tendency of the subjectsand the correlation between FD/FI and part-of-speech acquisition. Based on the analysis of the collected data in this experiment, this study finds:Students of Class10of Hebei Raoyang Senior High School are mostly FI.The field independent learners can do better than field dependent learners inpart-of-speech acquisition.This study can help the students know more about their learning style and theirpreference on using part-of-speech learning strategy through the study of therelationship of cognitive style and part-of-speech acquisition. The students cancultivate, select their part-of-speech learning strategy and finally form their ownlearning style. Meanwhile, the teacher can organize the teaching activities accordingto individual differences and improve the teaching effect. |
