| The trend of internationalization and globalization leads to an increasing demandfor more qualified people capable of intercultural communication. The developmentof language theories and the requirements of new English Curriculum Standards havemade it explicit that the aim of foreign language teaehing is to develop students’competence for intercultural communication. Therefore, culture teaching should betreated as a necessary component in foreign language teaching.In order to find out the problems of culture teaching in senior high schools andmake proper suggestions to improve the quality of English culture teaching, the authormakes a questionnaire of English culture teaching in a senior high school and does aninterview. By analyzing the figures of the questionnaire and the interview, the authorfinds out some problems of English culture teaching in senior high schools anddiscusses how to develop English culture teaching efficiently in senior high schoolsand makes some suggestions.The thesis consists of seven parts. The first part serves as the introduction of thewhole thesis. It offers an overview of the background, purpose, necessity of the study.It also points out the methods adopted in the study. The second part is a literaturereview about the development of research on culture teaching both home and abroad.The third part is theoretical foundation. It gives a brief explication of the relationshipbetween language and culture, language teaching and culture teaching. The fourth partis a survey of current culture teaching in a senior high school. The results indicate thatmost teachers and students have been aware of the fact that culture teaching attachesgreat importance to English language teaching. However, the teachers haven’t paidenough attention to culture teaching in their classroom instruction due to the influenceof various factors, which in turn hinder the development of students’ cross-culturalcommunicative competence. The fifth part is the culture teaching experiment. It lastsfor five months. The result of the experiment proves the necessity and the importanceof English culture teaching in senior high schools. The sixth part is the suggestions for English culture teaching. The author raises some suggestions according to the surveyand the experiment. The last part is conclusion. It generalizes the major findings andlimitations of this thesis, suggestions for further research are also discussed. |
