Vocabulary teaching is the basis of English teaching and so teachershave attached great importance to it. As a matter of fact, the key to thevocabulary teaching is to teach vocabulary by adopting language contextas the meaning of a word is determined by its language context withoutwhich the meaning can’t be confirmed. Language context is an importantconcept in modern linguistics. In1923a Polish anthropologistMalinowski was the first to put forward and explain the concept oflanguage context in his appendix to Meaning of meaning authored byOgden and Richards. He stated,“Utterance is closely combined withenvironment and context is essential to linguistic comprehension.” Theauthor of this thesis discovers that there are many problems for thosejunior students who have difficulty in vocabulary learning. For example, they cannot memorize words correctly and spell words exactly, nor dothey know that the same word has different meanings in differentsituations. The author thinks that the solutions to these problems lie in thefact that vocabulary teaching should be combined with context. In a way,the teaching method of the combination of vocabulary teaching withlanguage context can not only reflect teachers’ abilities in Englishteaching, but it can also improve students’ abilities in using languageflexibly. This thesis consists of six parts. Introduction briefly states thesignificance and urgency of this study. Chapter One outlines the literaturereview of the study of language context and students with learningdifficulty. And then goes on to analyze the relationship between languagecontext and vocabulary teaching. Chapter Two presents the theoreticalfoundation. ChapterFour is the finding and enlightenment of the research as the kernel of thethesis. The author places great importance on the effects of the theory ofcontext on the vocabulary acquisition for junior students with learningdifficulty by adopting the methods of quantitative analysis combined withqualitative analysis, such as, questionnaire, sampling survey andexperiment and so on. In addition, the author also puts forward a set offive measures of a context to acquire vocabulary. The last part serves asthe conclusion and advice of the study.
