This research explores the types and levels of teacher speech that occur in kindergarten. A total of12teachers participated in the study consisting of both sound recording as well as recorded observations of teacher speech. Both sound recording and observations are coded according the function of speech, the categories are collapsed into three categories. Directive speech are intend to control the child’s behavior, question speech (open-ended or closed-ended) are intend to elicit information from the child, and statement speech (Brief and detailed answers and assessments) are intended to answer or inform the child or assess on going activities.Results revealed that rates of the types of teacher speech are similar according to different age classes, but the types of teacher speech vary substantially according to activity type. The most frequent type of speech is directive speech which occurs almost during life activity produced by teachers, question speech is the lowest types of speech which is most common during teaching and learning activity produced by teachers, however, most statement speech occurs during teaching and learning activity.Based on those research results, this research discusses and exemplifies the types of teacher speech how to impact child language production and cognition. In the end, there are some corresponding recommendations for teaching practice.
