Sword, short weapon, a type of Chinese weapon in ancient china, has a longhistory, and undergoes the stone-made period, the copper-made period and theiron-made period. In the course of evolution, a particular sword-cultural phenomenonfocusing on sword is formed, which had influences on the formation and developmentof social culture in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods, and itextends the current overall development of martial arts in China. The Spring andAutumn and the Warring States are the special historical periods, full of frequentchange in social relationship, the transition from slave society to feudal society, everykingdom becomes powerful owing to decentralization, fighting on land makes swordplay an important role in the war. With the unprecedented development of sword,sword culture is formed out of its defending function whatever the level is, not onlythe shape but also the spiritual connotation. Sword has its own humanistic connotation,and its influence is beyond the other weapon.With the method of documents and analysis and logical reasoning, taking theformation of sword as a key, this thesis explores the formation process of swordculture in the Spring and the Autumn and the Warring States Periods, meanwhile,discusses the its effects on society from the perspectives of the sword shape, itsclassification, casting, wearing sword, and evaluating sword. Then the conclusion isdrawn that sword culture has deep influences on the development of different socialclasses, and its influences have reference function for the development of Chinesemartial arts. Firstly, the trend of advocating sword swept the country in the differentsocial classes in the Spring and the Autumn and the Warring States Periods, the swordculture, as the representative of new concept, advanced the development of politics,military, economy, and culture of the period; secondly, cultivation of ethic thoughtwas increased and the formation of martial virtue was strengthened by the educationfunction of sword culture; thirdly, the study on sword culture proved its organizedinheritance，and its effects exist in present social life; fourthly, sword culture promotesthe development of concept of wholism of martial arts as the model example, and itplays a driving role in the regression of culture of present martial arts, in promotion ofmoral traits, and in the reform of martial arts. Based on these influences, the study on the formation of sword culture and itsinfluences is still of realistic value today. In order to inherit the essence of splendidChinese traditional culture, and to promote the development of Chinese martial arts,the significant achievements of sword culture are taken as the example, the positiveattitudes should be shown toward China martial arts, through the internal reform andregression to the culture level, in the face of cultural conflict of western sports culture.
