After searching relevant materials, this paper makes an attempt to give a systematic study on many respects of the cultivation of visual literacy from the perspective of visual rhetoric by ways of examples. And this paper is hoped to prove practical, purposeful and instructional. Though much research has been done on visual rhetoric and visual rhetoric yet the study on the combination of the two is few, which also offers a new idea brought forth in this paper.The first chapter introduction part introduces the background and ideas of the studies, and then analyses the research methods and research purposes in this study process.The second chapter is an overview of visual rhetoric part. Based on the analysis of the historical evolution and development of visual rhetoric all around the world, the research in the visual rhetoric is still deficient, especially in domestic, it still to be a weakness situation. After introducing the specific concept and research fields of visual rhetoric, this topic also discusses the link between visual rhetoric and visual communication, visual modification, image rhetoric and even the figure of speech for the further understanding.The third chapter is the visual rhetoric and visual literacy part. First this chapter discusses the visual literacy briefly, points out that the training of visual literacy mainly reflects in the training of visual comprehension ability and visual expression ability, and then analysis the feasibility of this topic.The fourth chapter is one of the most important progresses in this study. In the training of visual comprehension ability, firstly puts the image as the main object, then the training starts with the three levels of symbol. Due to its abstract extent, this chapter raises that we should pay attention to the general visual rhetoric rules and principles, the training of visual association ability, the training of vision cognitive learning ability. The vision cognitive learning ability is composed with three parts, the visual attention training, the visual memory training and eventually the form of visual thinking.The fifth chapter is another important achievement of this research. In visual expression ability, the training starts with rhetoric situation:audience, purpose and context. Then to meet the needs of rhetoric situation, we can use arrangement, stressed, clear, concise, tone and style these six strategies for the level classification and coding of visual language. And in order to carry out these strategies, we use cognitive laws, gestalt principles and visual habit. Finally, this chapter summarizes the training strategies of visual expression ability with a practical case.The sixth chapter sums up the achievement and the defects in the process in this thesis studying, and has looked into the distance to the follow-up studying and developing direction about the cultivation of visual literacy from the perspective of visual rhetoric.
