With the implementation of the new curriculum reform, the English teachers play animportant role in the reform. The implementation of the Full-time Compulsory EducationEnglish Curriculum Standards, the use of new teaching materials and the proposal of newteaching methods require the English teachers to have new teaching concept, new teachingmethods and the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, which are thenew challenge for English teachers, especially the junior English teachers in rural areas. Thebest way to improve themselves is to take part in the further education. However, there arestill many problems remaining to be settled in rural teachers’ further education. As a result, itis necessary to strengthen the further education research for rural junior school Englishteachers.This investigation takes some of the rural junior English teachers in the five county-levelcities in Qingdao as the object. First, the author looked through the related data to domesticand oversea further education and made an analysis, review and comparison of thebackground and development history and characteristics. Then under a general analysis of thepresent basic condition of rural junior English teachers and work progress of their furthereducation, the author looked into the present condition of further education in Qingdao bymeans of questionnaire and interview etc. The investigation involves the teachers’ teachingconcept and teaching implementation, the teachers’ view, curriculum, the model and type offurther education, assessment and training team etc. The method of percentage calculation isadopted in the process of the obtaining data. And on the basis of the present situation, itanalyzes the problems existing in the rural junior English teachers’ further education. Fromthe investigation results, it is seen that the following prominent problems exist in furthereducation for rural junior English teachers.1. New curriculum training should be strengthened.2. The rural junior English teachers’ understanding of the motivation and purpose offurther education is inadequate.3. There exist deficiencies in the system of rural junior English teachers’ further education.4. The current training theories are separated from the rural junior English teachers’teaching practice.5. The training content is lack of effectiveness.6. The training methods are onefold and could be improved.7. The evaluation mechanism of training is defective.Based on the analysis,the investigation presents the countermeasures and suggestionsfor the administrative departments, the training institutions and schools to promote healthydevelopment in Qingdao City.For the administrative departments:1. To change the concept and function, keeping pace with the time.2. To put the idea of “lifelong education” in place.3. To do a good job of reward system of rural junior school English teachers’ furthereducation.4. To implement effective measures to improve the level of English teachers in ruraljunior schools.For the training institutions:1. To make clear training objectives.2. To formulate reasonable contents.3. To select excellent training teachers.4. To implement the training model with pertinency and effectiveness.For the schools:1. To attach importance to teachers’ professional development.2. To strengthen the efforts of the school-based training.This investigation consists of six parts. In the first part, the author expatiates thebackground to choose this thesis, the purpose, the significance and the structure of theinvestigation. The second part is the literature review and the definition of relevant conceptsof the teachers’ further education. The third one is about the design and implementation of theinvestigation and the dada analysis. Part Four is about the main problems and analysis of thereasons of the rural junior English teachers’ further education in Qingdao, according to the analysis results. Part Five is about the countermeasures and suggestions to implement ruraljunior English teachers’ further education for administrative departments, the traininginstitutions and schools.Based on these findings, the author of this thesis conducts an empirical study on therural junior English teachers’ further education in Qingdao City, which is of great practicalvalue to the vigorous reform and implementation of teacher education for in-service Englishteachers throughout the countryside. The analysis provides new thought and countermeasuresfor the relevant administrative departments, training institutions and schools to furtherimprove the rural junior English teachers’ further education, so as to effectively improve thequality of rural junior English teachers.
