This paper is a study on reaching five curriculum targets, including language knowledge, language skills, emotional attitudes, learning strategies and cultural awareness. Starting with the spirit of the new round of curriculum reform, using the "Senior High School English Curriculum Standards (Trial Edition)" as evaluation standard, supported by extensive references of domestic and overseas theories of teaching materials evaluation, and keeping in mind the function of teaching materials and the features of English course, this paper takes Advance with English (Yilin-Oxford edition) as an example to verify the implementation result of teaching materials by analyzing how this textbook meets the curriculum standard and reaches the five curriculum targets, as well finds the problems and gives some suggestion on better use of teaching materials.This paper is divided into four parts.The first chapter is the introduction, including the object of study, the background, significance and methods. It briefly introduces the significance of the new curriculum standard’s publishment, explains why Advance with English (Yilin-Oxford edition) is selected as the study object and gives a general overview of the existing study achievements.The second chapter is the presentation and interpretation of the content of new curriculum standard of high school English, including its philosophy and the content of five targets, and how they guide the teaching materials’writing.The third chapter takes Advance with English (Yilin-Oxford edition) as an example to study and evaluate how it reaches the curriculum target by elaborating on a couple of points, including language goal, knowledge and skills, learning strategie, emotional attitudes, and cultural awareness.The fourth chapter sums up the advantages and disadvantages of the new teaching materials according to its effectiveness of reaching curriculum target, provides advices on writing teaching materials in the future and how to solve the problems that teachers may have during using these teaching materials.
