Outside daughters-in-law, refer to the females who come from other places in China except Shanghai and marry local men in Shanghai. Compared with other ordinary ones, the families formed by these women and Shanghai men, have many things in common and differences too. For example, many of them are such a combination:the wife comes from a remote district and with poor school education, while the husband is of old age, disabled, or with adverse experiences.Through the interviews of40outside daughters-in-law and30migrant female workers living in JP Street, Shanghai, the author sums up some characteristics of outside daughters-in-law, such as the feeling of comparative deprivation, the lack of support from social network, and the shortages of marriageable young men’s abilities and talents. The author invited some of the outside daughters-in-law who have communication problems with their family members to the "Family Communication" group for eight times. Based on The Satir Model, the group intends to raise the self-esteem and confidence of outside daughters-in-law and improve the sense of their belonging and happiness. The main parts of the essay are about the interviews with the application of The Satir Model, the working procedures of the group, and case analyses of the group members. It tries to find whether the outside daughters-in-law and their families can get better changes and more happiness by the application of The Satir Model. The essay presents the following conclusions:1. As the politically disadvantaged minority, outside daughters-in-law have the sense of comparative deprivation. But they are good at exploiting usable resources to maintain self values.2. The Satir Model can intervene in outside daughters-in-law families. And the degree of the self-esteem and confidence in these females by The Satir Therapy is higher than by just communicating with family members.3. The modes of communicating and raising children in outside daughters-in-law families have little connection with the ones in their original families, which is different from the theories of The Satir Model about original families.4. The leaders of the group are the keys to performing The Satir Model.
