Being a compulsory subject, English takes its significant position in the fundamentaleducation phrase. With the reform and development of the fundamental education, bothteachers and students are meeting new demands required by it. The core ideas of the newcurriculum are based on developing students, respecting students and letting students learnindependently. English dictionaries are a good resource in the course of English learning,which help English learners a lot in improving their English and play an important role infostering the self-regulated learning ability at the same time. Apart from that, theimprovement of the efficient using of English dictionaries demands the learners’ strategiesand approaches.This essay contains five chapters. Chapter1introduces the background and significanceof this research. The author points out the importance of English as a subject and thefunctions of English dictionaries to English learning. Chapter2is the literature review. Theauthor gives a definition and a brief introduction of English reference books,discussesseveral learning theories related and touches on the present research situations aboutreference books both at home and abroad.Chapter3and4are the research design and data analysis respectively. This researchcarries out in the form of questionnaires and interviews. According to the analysis of theresulting data, the situations of the present application of English dictionaries among seniorhigh students are showed as follows: firstly, English dictionaries are widely possessed;secondly, students have basic acquaintance with English dictionaries; thirdly, students arelack of strategies in adopting English dictionaries; fourthly, senior high students and teachers’attitudes towards English dictionaries are fine.Chapter5is the conclusion of the research. Considering the present situation, this essayputs forward several suggestions as follows: firstly, both teachers and students should paymore attention to the choice of English dictionaries and strengthen the cognition of thecontents and framework of English dictionaries. Secondly, senior high students’ strategies touse reference books need to be fostered and they should be encouraged to use them more; Meanwhile schools and educators should attach more importance to the supplementaryfunctions of English dictionaries.
