The Print Media Image Of Disabled Athletes In Beijing Paralympic Games

In this paper, with using Discourse Analysis Theory, through textual analysis and the content analysis, we make an effort to find out the media image of disabled athletes in the background of the13rd. Summer Paralympic Games. Meanwhile we discuss how the media image has been constructed, and which kind of sport spirit and core values have been transferred from the imageThe framework of this paper is as followed:In the first chapter, researcher has reported the background of the study, purposes of the study, theoretical significance and practical significance of the study.In the second chapter, researcher has collated and reviewed the related literatures mainly in three categories:the communication studies with the disabilities as study object, with media image construction as study subject; with discourse analysis as study methods.In the third chapter, researcher has defined some basic concepts. And elaborated the discourse analysis theory from origin and inherit to study objects and analytical methods.The forth chapter is mainly about methods of this study:content analysis and text analysis.The fifth chapter is the core part of this study. To figure out the manifestations of the Games in the print media, researcher has analyzed the contents of news which has mainly reported all kinds of games about Beijing Paralympic Games in Beijing Youth Daily and Beijing Evening News. Meanwhile, to figure out the construction of media image of those disabled athletes, researcher chose discourse analysis theory and discussed the reason why news reports represented the disabled athletes as they were and the messages about sport spirits and core values they try to convey in the profiles.The end of this study, the chapter six, is mainly about the conclusions and the recommendations. Researcher has summarized the main conclusions of this study and has given some directions for follow-up studies.
