The past decades have seen a continuous and steady evolution of English teaching materials for students for elementary and secondary school, as demanded by new developments of the21st century.Since the introduction of The Full-time Compulsory Education in Ordinary Senior High School English Curriculum Standards (experimental manuscript)(short title of the standard), there has been a trend of the second development of teaching materials and school-based localization of national curriculum. As a result, the interpretation and practice of the same curriculum vary from school to school, and teacher to teacher. Taking this background into account, the writer has studied the current situation of curriculum practice in various schools in Shanghai.In the form of survey and interview, the study focuses on teachers’familiarity with Oxford English Textbooks, attitudes towards using Oxford English Textbooks, interpretation of the curriculum standard, specific problems in using the textbooks. Deep analysis on cases of innovative employment of teaching materials have been made as well as suggestions.The findings are as follows:1. The situation of the English teaching materials employment in various schools in Shanghai is generally satisfactory, with routine practice taking much of the proportion and much room left for innovation.2. Only a few language teachers refer to the curriculum standard when planning teaching objectives.3. Over50%of the language teachers personalize teaching materials in ways such as supplement, removal, substation and reorganization.4. There is a lack of systematic approach to developing curriculum resources.Therefore, aiming at a more flexible and innovative employment of teaching materials, teachers should:1. Upgrade their interpretation of the curriculum standard.2. Lay emphasis on the correct reading and practice of the curriculum standard, and on a student-oriented design teaching objectives.3. Pay attention to an appropriate reorganization of the teaching materials.4. Bear in mind the significance of life-long learning for students.5. Update teaching materials, taking advantage of the Internet, newspapers, radio, and etc.
