With the rising of globalized economy and the coming of information age, the internationalization of higher education increasingly becomes important in every country. As one of the most developed countries in higher education, the United States has accumulated a lot of experiences and significant accomplishments, during its three centuries’history of higher education internationalization. The United States is top-listed in receiving overseas students, a large number of excellent foreign students were attracted to U.S. universities and colleges, for their distinctive characteristics and open admission policies, and that brings huge economic benefits for America. What is the reason behind the prominent achievements? The exchange of scholars are encouraged by U.S. universities, and curriculum are revised to better accommodate internationalization; Moreover, they make full use of online resources, and actively participate in transnational cooperation and exchanges, branch-campuses are established in various countries, or virtual institutions are set up on line.This paper firstly reviews the different historical periods of internationalization of higher education in America, and analyzes the backgrounds. Secondly, it expands to the details of U.S. practices, and elaborates strategies had been employed, that including the double-flowing of students, the exchange of scholars, the internationalization of curriculum, the transnational inter-university cooperation, and the development of academic exchanges. Thirdly, this paper analyzes the reform measures and strategic framework of the globally-oriented universities, with the Yale University as an example. And lastly are our conclusions, in which the author presents her advices on the internationalization of China’s higher education, with the aim of accelerating China’s paces, and enhancing China’s international competitiveness and comprehensive national power.
