Both the teacher and students are teaching subjects in class. "Classroom roles of the teacher and students" is a functional term which stands for the teaching and learning activities performed during the process of classroom teaching. It regulates duties and behavior of the teacher and students, and plays a key role in the process of applying teaching theories to practice to achieve teaching objectives. Based on the clearly explanations of the development process of the Communicative Language Teaching in China, this study clarifies the reason why the author choose to make a comparison between the 3P approach and the TBLT approach, and analyzes the necessities for comparative study on roles of teachers and students under the background of pedagogic transformation. On the basis of studies on language learning and teaching process, the author explores the framework about how to investigate roles of the teacher and students in classroom teaching, and compares the roles of the teacher and students in both two teaching methods through the analysis of two typical cases. And then some specific strategies are finally proposed and discussed for the transformation of roles of the teacher and students from the 3P approach to the TBLT approach.In addition to the introduction, there are six parts in this study. Brief descriptions as following:Introduction:Clarify the origin of this study, the status quo, research ideas and value, and the main concepts are defined.Part 1:The necessity analysis of a comparative study on roles of the teacher and students are made against the background of the pedagogic transformation. From the perspective of the development process of English language teaching reform, the requirement of teaching objectives is undergoing a transformation from "the structure-function objectives" to "the function objectives"; from the perspective of the development process of English language teaching, English language teaching in junior high school experiences the transformation from the 3P approach to the TBLT approach. Thus, this research conducts a comparative study on roles of the teacher and students against the background of the pedagogical reform which depends on the analysis of the teacher’s and students’behavior in classroom teaching.Part 2:Framework for analysis of classroom roles is constructed. Roles of the teacher and students are investigated by two basic aspects:the inspection of teacher’s teaching behavior and students’learning behavior in teaching activities. Teaching behavior is inspected by two perspectives:teaching process which is detailed by the following angels, language situation presentation, language skills practice, and grammar emphasis; and teaching effectiveness which is observed by the following angels, language input and language output. And learning behavior is inspected by two perspectives:the process of language input and language output.Part 3 & 4:Roles of the teacher and students are compared against the background of pedagogic transformation. Guided by the framework constructed in Part 2, the roles of the teacher and students in the sampled teaching records are analyzed.Part 5:Roles of the teacher and students in comparison:3P vs. TBLT. Based on the analysis of roles in the two former parts, detailed comparisons are made on roles of the teacher and students in the two pedagogical approaches.Part 6:Strategies for roles transformation:from 3P to TBLT. Strategies are finally proposed and discussed on the basis of detailed comparisons for the transformation of roles of the teacher and students from following aspects:situation presentation, skills practice, language using, classroom presentation, cooperation, and so on.
