Tourism geography is an important sub-discipline of humanistic geography, its learning helps to improve the geographical and cultural literacy, and it is not only the spiritual nourishment in the busy and boring courses for high school students, but also a necessary complement to natural geography courses. The opening of tourism geography courses helps students adapt better to society, cultivates their patriotic emotion, cultivates their aesthetic sentiments, shapes a healthy personality and noble moral feelings, it is of great significance to the development of students’physical and mental health. However, tourism geography courses are elective in high school, and affected by the examination-oriented education system, the teaching of tourism geography still has many problems, such as the serious deviation of its objectives from the basic requirements of the new curriculum, its poor timeliness, and etc. This paper analyzes the important role of the meaningful learning theory in the teaching of tourism geography, investigates the use of its psychological mechanisms to promote the teaching quality of tourism geography in order to improve the current problems in secondary school geography teaching in China. Finally, this paper takes industrial tourism as an example for the instructional design of the extra-curricular practices, with the intention to guide the teaching through the application of Ausubel’s meaningful learning theory, in order to help students truly understand and master the knowledge and skills of tourism geography, stimulate their interest in learning, create a good learning atmosphere, improve the learning outcomes, and promote effectively the teaching quality of tourism geography.
