This paper discusses the social adaptation of Tibetan migrants who settled down in Xining city from remote ethnic districts in Qinghai Province. Xining city, the capital of Qinghai province, is the center of the political and cultural,as well as the economic center. This paper’s respondents is the Tibetan migrants, they lived in Qinghai Tibetan region previously where Tibetan people and other minorities live, and the natural economy based on tradition animal husbandry. After they moved into the capital city, their live environment is more modernized and metropolitanized compared with their previous lifestyle. After they settled down in Xining city, everything is new and unfamiliar, in additional, most of the migrants are old people and children, how about their urban life after the migration? The status for the resocialization of these Tibetan people is an important criterion to judge their adaptation for city. So the author accomplished this paper after the field work in the new south district in Xining city, this new district is a newly-built downtown since2001,almost10years development, the former farmland already were transformed into a modern residential district. The new district’s housing price is very cheap initially, so it attracted more and more people to purchase the house in the new district, especially the Tibetan people from Tibetan Autonomous County in Qinghai province. Therefore, the author chose this district as the field.This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the research background, the definition of the social adaptation and the academic value of this thesis. The second chapter is the detailed introduction of the fields and the respondents. The third chapter is the core of this thesis, the author analyses of the Tibetan migrants’social adaptation, mainly from four perspectives, the economic adaptation, the lifestyle adaptation, the social intercourse adaptation and the psychological adaptation. On the basis of the investigation to the Tibetan migrants, the author found they have many obstacles on the urban adaptation. The fourth chapter analyses the main reasons for the difficulties in social adaptation. The last chapter summarized this thesis, and proposed the suggestion for the solution of existed problems.
