Yunnan Tibetan Areas is the abbreviation of the Tibetan areas in Yunnan Province. It mainly includes Shangri-La and Deqin counties in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which is located at the border of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet provinces. The research of the democratic reform and social changes of Yunnan Tibetan areas in the 1950s is based on the relevant files, social surveys, historical data and other materials from three aspects.First, the paper briefly discussed the formation and the evolution of Tibetan areas in Yunnan, and analyzed its historical and cultural characteristics:on one hand, it is located in the south of Tibetan-Yi Corridor, which has always been multi-ethnic blend of interactive land. On the other hand, because it is an integral part of the District in Khampa Tibetan area, it has an important position in the geopolitical situation. Then, this paper revealed the basic outlook of the Yunnan Tibetan feudal serfdom society from the political, religious and socio-economic etc. which mainly takes the theocracy as the core before the 1950s when democratic reform was not formed.Secondly, based on the file data and survey materials, this paper summed up the theoretical foundation, the basic conditions and the guiding ideology, main tasks, principles and policies of the democratic reform in Yunnan Tibetan areas. At the mean time, it divided Yunnan Tibetan democratic reform into the following stages and specific courses:buffer reform, peace negotiation and quelling the rebels, And analyses specific process in every stage systematically.Finally, the paper analyses the basic appearance of the Yunnan Tibetan society after democratic reform, and showed the political, economic, religious and other aspects’structural changes before and after the democratic reform in Tibetan Area when the society changed from theocratic feudal serfdom to socialist society.
