In general, the military terms have the following characteristics: single meaning, fixedconnotation and extension, concept expressing the special field. While words and phrases isthe most sensitive part in language, with the development of the times, large amounts ofmilitary terms have broken through their original semantic and pragmatic scope spreading tosports fields. So,making investigations and researches on the generalization of military termsin sports field and taking a relative systematic and closed investigation can draw the outline ofthe general picture of the generalization of military terms. The generalization of the militaryterms is a step-by-step course, normally there are three stages: the generalization of militaryterms in sports field is temporary, military terms are generalizing in the sports field, theprofessional meaning of the military terms have already generalized in sports filed. There aremany reasons for the military terms spreading to sports field, besides the comprehensivesocial cause and the cause of the language itself, the most important deep-seated mentalmechanism is the human’s metaphorical way of thought. Because of the metaphorical way ofthought, people use one kind of concept to express another one and form a mapping betweenthe two conceptual domains. Therefore, through the association of comparability and by usingthe military terms into the sports field, people achieve the generalization of the military terms. As a new perspective for military terms generalization study, its practical significance is notonly providing a theoretical basis for the subsequent study of the language generalization, butalso providing the practical guidance. So it has a great academic value.
