The Change Of The Public Cultural Life In Rural China Since The Reform And Opening Up

The public culture life in rural areas has been changed significantly and profoundly since the reform and opening up. On one hand, it gradually declined and decayed. On the other hand, farmers’values and ethics have also been changing.In this paper, I will try to understand the changing process of public cultural life through the description of basketball court in a village and make efforts to comprehend its reason. Also this paper attempts to give some suggestions on culture construction.On the basis of the description, this paper contends that the public cultural life in rural areas has gone through a significant and profound process. At the beginning, the public cultural life made a good development, and then it went into prosperity stage. However, as time went on,it started to decline gradually.When analyzing the logic of the public cultural life in rural areas, it provides two powers, shortly, the state and the market. The paper contends that it was the two powers that influenced the rural society and caused the great changes on public cultural life. On one hand, the proper withdrawal of the state from rural society led to the growth of the personal power, thus farmers’ private space increased a lot. On the other hand, the market gave rise to the change of farmers’ values and ethics, influencing the public cultural life.In the last, this thesis give some suggestions on culture construction, such as the emphasis on government, supply and demand, population differences an so on.
