Primary and secondary teachers’union is an independent mass organization set up in primary and secondary schools, it is a union which serves for grassroots faculty, represent and safeguard interests of the grassroots faculty. The functions of the primary and secondary education union mainly includes "participation, maintenance, construction, education", of which safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the teachers is the basic function. Yet, due to the lack of organizational independence, the teachers don’t take enough support on it, the presence of neglected maintenance functions at this stage in primary and secondary teacher union of China needs to be improved.The thesis consists of six parts. The first part contents literature review and definition of core concepts. Through mass reading and organizing of literature, I find that that previous study of American education unions were mainly based on the National Education Association(the NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (the AFT), because they are typical representative of the U.S. education unions. In the second part, we review the formation and development of primary and secondary teachers’ union of China, elaborate overview of the development of primary and secondary teachers union of China from three aspects:the functions of the organization, the management of funds, the active policy. The third part is a part of empirical investigation. The author carried out field research through a combination of surveys and in-depth interviews among21schools in Nanchang, trying to show a more complete status of primary and secondary teachers’ union. The fourth part is a comparative study part. The paper compares teachers’ union between China and America from five aspects:organization nature, organization functions, organizational funding, organization active policy and organizations operate, and sums up some useful experience of American teachers’ union. The fifth part is Reflections on how to improve primary and secondary teachers’ unions of China, gives proposals among the four aspects of primary and secondary teachers’ union:terms of personnel, funding, extend the function, the relevant stakeholders. The end of this thesis are Conclusions and Outlook. The primary and secondary teachers’union of Nanchang is a microcosm of primary and secondary teachers’union of China, reflects some common problems of the current primary and secondary teacher’union of China. The ultimate goal of study on primary and secondary teachers’union is to improve the work of primary and secondary teachers’ union, making it practical to play the unique role and fully reflects its value. |
