The Chinese government began to conclude bilateral investment treaties (BITs) with foreigner countries in1980s, including the governments of German, France, Thailand, Japan, etc. During the past decade, great changes has taken place in the filed of international investment; the governments of German, France, and Netherlands initiated to re-negotiate these BITs, in order to adapt to the new trends. The Sino-Thai BIT was also concluded in the same period, which was facing the same situation as the BITs mentioned before. This paper focuses on the study of Sino Thailand BIT, especially the inadequacy of definition of investment, treatment of investment, expropriation and dispute settlement, and seeks to make the improvement. The text consists of three chapters.The first chapter discusses the content of Sino-Thai BIT, focusing on analysis of the definition of investment, treatment of investment, expropriation and dispute settlement provisions, summarized the shortcomings.The second chapter concludes the new development of IIA, which is divided into four parts. The first part is to study the characteristics of new development of the bilateral investment treaties and regional investment agreements; the second and the third part study on both intra-ASEAN investment rules and China-ASEAN investment rules; the fourth section analyzes the main content of the revision of BITs of China in recent years. Analyzes all the new development can be a lesson to the improvement of Sino-Thai BIT.The third chapter is the specific ideas and suggestions to improve the Sino-Thai bilateral investment treaty. The research and analysis on some of the more mature bilateral investment treaties, regional investment agreements set a good example for the perfection of Sino Thai BIT provisions including the definition of investment, treatment of investment, expropriation and dispute settlement.
