The election of Barack Obama as the president of the United States marks theopening of a new period in America’s long racial history. As Barack Obamaascending to the highest position of the United States, the situation and inner mind ofthe African American is changed accordingly. With the progress and development ofAmerican society, blackness as an embodiment of the common trait of the membersfrom American black community is constantly undergoing change. Therefore, in thenew age of Barack Obama, the conception of blackness has also changed. The studies on the conception of blackness by scholars in the past areconcentrating on black people’s distinctive external characteristics, common pursuitof interests and welfare for the black community, and other common problemsobsessing the black community. These aspects are studied by scholars as embodimentof blackness in different historical periods. With the development and diversificationof American society and the enlargement of individual differences within the blackcommunity, interpretations of blackness from these aspects are not sufficient toembody the common trait of the black people in the new age.The election of Barack Obama as the first black president in the United Stateshas aroused great and pervasive upbeat attitude and confidence. The thesis works onthe analysis and research of the papers and comments from the two Americanmainstream magazines Ebony and Essence published during2009to2010to discoverthat the common trait of the black people as a community is displayed in the black’supbeat spiritual status. It is their great confidence upon their personal abilities andgood faith on the better bright future of the black community. Therefore, the thesisconcludes that the conception of blackness in the new age is black people’sconfidence.
